Reading good books is one of the greatest pleasures in life. It increases our pleasure when we are cheerful, and lessens our troubles when we are sad. Whatever may be our main purpose in reading, our contact with good books should always give us enjoyment and satisfaction.

From gool reading we can derive companionship. The people we meet in books may delight us, may be welcomed as new acquaintances. Our human friends sometimes may bore us, but the friends we make in books may never trouble us. When human friends desert us, good books are always ready to give us friendship, sympathy and encourage.

One of the most valuable gifts offered by books is experience. In books we may visit famous places, meet various people, get to know new thoughts, which is quite beyond our experience of everyday life. In this way we may be well-informed and become quali fied modern men.

读好书是人生最大的乐趣之一。高兴时读书可以增加我们的乐趣，忧愁时读书可以减轻我们的.烦恼。不管我们带着什么目的去读它，好书总会给我们乐趣和满足。

Reading Good Books

Devote some of your leisure, I repeat, to cultivating a love of reading good books. Fortunate indeed are those who contrive to make themselves genuine book-lovers. For book- lovers have some noteworthy advantages over other people. They need never know lonely hours so long as they have books around them, and the better the books the more delightful the company. From good books, moreover, they draw much besides entertainment. They gain mental food such as few companions can supply. Even while resting from their labors they are, through the books they read, equipping themselves to perform those labors more efficiently. This albeit~ they may not be deliberately reading to improve their mind. All unconsciously the ideas they derive from the printed pages are stored up, to be worked over by the imagination for their future profit.
